Yesterday afternoon, while reviewing the draft consent order released last week, CFPUA became aware of a September 2018 report, prepared for Chemours, that quantifies levels of PFAS in the Cape Fear River upstream and downstream of the Fayetteville Works facility. Today, we reached out to Secretary Regan at North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to learn more about the report’s context, and to see if the report was considered during the consent order negotiation process.
As seen in the graph below, the report clearly shows that the site is releasing additional PFAS compounds to the River. Data attached in the report also show that PFECA levels at the CFPUA intake are above a combined 70 parts per trillion, the level at which the proposed consent order would require Chemours to fund additional treatment for groundwater users in Bladen County.
This report both confirms our opinion that the proposed consent order does not address the concerns of the residents of New Hanover County, and that Chemours does not notify downstream users of information critical to public health in a timely and efficient manner.
CFPUA will release another NewsFlash when we receive a response from NCDEQ.
