CFPUA Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant wins top industry award from North Carolina Sections of American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association
Adds to three honors announced last month; All four awards to be handed out November 16 in Raleigh
Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) is pleased to announce its M’Kean Maffitt (Southside) Wastewater Treatment Plant has been awarded the 2015 Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award for the Eastern Region from the North Carolina Section of the American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA). NC AWWA-WEA is an organization with more than 3,000 members in North Carolina representing municipal and private utilities, consulting engineering firms, government agencies, companies who provide equipment and supplies to the industry and representatives of academia who teach and conduct research in water and wastewater-related areas.
NC AWWA-WEA is dedicated to providing water and wastewater education, training, and service in an effort to protect public health and the environment. Every year, it honors top performers in the water and wastewater industries with a series of awards to recognize the dedication and ingenuity of its members across the state.
NC AWWA-WEA honored CFPUA’s Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant for having “the most outstanding plant operation and maintenance (O&M) efforts, according to the best use of the resources available to that facility. … It honors the wastewater plant personnel that serve their community with a high level of professionalism and diligent work in the operation and maintenance of their wastewater treatment facility.”
The honor is added to the three coveted honors CFPUA staff were awarded last month:
• Robert Daughtry, CFPUA’s Utilities Collection System Manager, is the 2015 Wastewater Collection Operator of the Year Award winner for his “contribution to the successful operation and maintenance of a sewage collection system”;
• Jim Tayson, CFPUA’s Water Distribution and Construction Manager, is the 2015 Water Distribution Operator of the Year Award winner for his “contribution to the successful operation and maintenance of a water distribution system”;
• Michael Richardson, CFPUA’s Water Resource Manager, is the 2015 Disaster Preparedness Award winner for an individual for his “outstanding achievement in advancing disaster preparedness initiatives thereby strengthening our preparedness.” In the past, NC AWWA-WEA has only given awards to facilities for their achievements in disaster preparedness. Mike is the first individual recipient of this award.

Southside plant staff, Daughtry, Tayson, and Richardson will be receive their awards during a special ceremony at the 95th Annual NC AWWA-WEA Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina on Monday, November 16, 2015.
