[ARCHIVED] CFPUA to Begin Sewer Smoke Testing May 17

Sanitary sewer cover

Starting on Saturday, May 17, CFPUA crews will be conducting sewer smoke testing in parts of the service area.

Smoke testing is a common method for utilities to find leaks or breaks in sewer mains.

During testing, non-toxic smoke-filled air is forced into the sanitary sewer system. As the smoke flows through the sewer mains, it will leak out of any defects in the pipe and escape through the ground. This allows crews to pinpoint sewer breaks that are in need of repair.

Crews will conduct testing Saturday, May 17, in the Waterford neighborhood in Myrtle Grove.

Testing will not occur on Sunday, May 18, but will resume Monday, May 19, and continue for several days in the following areas: Pine Hollow Drive, Echo East, Johnson Farms, Hidden Valley, Southwold Drive, and Pine Valley Drive. Crews will conduct smoke testing between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

Testing is expected to be complete within approximately two weeks.

Before smoke testing begins, CFPUA will hand-deliver notification to customers in impacted areas. Testing will not impact customers’ sewer services and customers do not need to be home while crews are working in their area.

Customers may notice smoke coming from manholes, vents, spots in the ground, and other locations during testing. The smoke is non-toxic, does not leave a residue, and does not pose a fire hazard.
