Cape Fear Public Utility Authority crews on Monday, April 24, stopped a sanitary sewer overflow on Whisper Creek Lane near Beasley Road.
About 8 a.m. Monday, a CFPUA pump station crew foreman discovered a sewer force main leak at Whisper Creek and Beasley. The leak stopped at 8:16 a.m. after a nearby pump station was shut down.
CFPUA crews using pump-and-haul operations were able to capture about 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater and return it to the sewer system. An estimated 2,000 gallons reached a tributary to the headwaters of Hewletts Creek, near the 1200 block of Beasley Road.
Crews are cleaning affected areas, and CFPUA staff will be conducting water sampling. The N.C. Division of Water Resources has been notified.
Repairs to the leak are currently ongoing.
