[ARCHIVED] Multiple financial assistance programs open to CFPUA customers

While the deadline to apply for financial assistance through the CFPUA COVID Relief Program has passed, several other programs to help pay past-due water and sewer bills remain open.

CFPUA customers may be eligible for bill assistance through one or more of the following programs:

  • Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP): LIHWAP is a federally funded program to provide financial assistance with water and sewer bills, administered in North Carolina by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. LIHWAP runs through September 30, 2023, or until funds are exhausted. Applicants can receive assistance through LIHWAP more than once. Customers can apply for LIHWAP at epass.nc.gov.
  • New Hanover County Emergency Rental Assistance Program: This program, administered by New Hanover County, can provide eligible renters financial assistance with housing costs, including water and sewer bills.   • New Hanover County Homeowner Assistance Program: This program, administered by New Hanover County, can provide eligible homeowners financial assistance with housing costs, including water and sewer bills. For more information on the Homeowner Assistance Program, including how to apply, click here.
  • CFPUA Assist: CFPUA Assist is a permanent program to provide CFPUA customers with one-time, emergency bill assistance. The program is administered by the New Hanover County Department of Social Services. Customers in need of assistance should visit DSS at 1650 Greenfield St., Wilmington.

More information on eligibility for these programs is available at CFPUA.org/Assist.

CFPUA also offers interest-free payment plans to help customers catch up with past-due bills. Plans can be set for a period of up to a year with payments due at the same time as your monthly CFPUA bill. Customers who stick to the terms of their payment plan will not be eligible for late fees or service disconnection.
