WILMINGTON, NC, OCT. 18, 2019: As a result of an emergency water main break, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) has issued a precautionary boil water advisory (PBWA) for customers living in the Channel Haven Community, including the 300 block of Friendly Shores Road. CFPUA crews are now on site to make the necessary repairs to restore water service as soon as possible. This will involve around 200 customers, all residential, and notification will be hand-delivered by our staff.
Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system. CFPUA customers in the above described area are asked to boil their water for one minute then allow it to cool prior to consumption or utilize another water source such as bottled water. Consumption includes drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, food preparation, fruit and vegetable washing, pet consumption, and the preparation of baby formula. Customers do NOT need to boil water prior to using it for showering or bathing.
The Precautionary Boil Water Advisory shall be in effect until water quality testing has occurred and service is returned to normal. When testing is completed, typically within 24 hours, and service is returned to normal, the advisory will be lifted. The lifting of the advisory will occur in one or more of the following ways: hand-delivered announcement, a post on www.cfpua.org, a recorded phone message at 332-6500, and/or a press release to area media outlets.

A precautionary boil water advisory is a public health announcement. When issued, the public should assume there is an elevated risk of their water being unsafe to drink. Advisories can be issued after: incidents that compromise the distribution system (ex. water main break); failure of/substantial interruption in water treatment processes that result in increased turbidity levels or particle counts; mechanical or equipment failure; violations of the total coliform rule or the turbidity standard of the surface water treatment rule; or a natural disaster. www.cdc.gov/healthywater/drinking.
If you are an establishment regulated by the New Hanover County Health Department and need more information, refer to the ‘What is a Boil Water Advisory’ guidance document available on www.cfpua.org under the Notifications link.

This advisory issued on Friday the 18th day of October 2019.
