[ARCHIVED] CFPUA creates new sustainability committee

On October 9, during its monthly meeting, the CFPUA Board approved the creation of a new committee to help the organization continue to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, protect the area’s natural resources, and prepare for the impacts of climate change. Dr. Jessica Cannon, County Commissioner Rob Zapple, and Jennifer Adams will serve as the new committee’s members.

“The employees and managers at CFPUA are an incredibly talented and innovative group and are deeply committed to addressing the challenges we face,” said Dr. Cannon. “I am so pleased to chair this new committee, which will serve as an anchoring forum for CFPUA’s current and future environmental initiatives.”

During the more than 10 years CFPUA has been in operation, the organization has made environmental stewardship one of its top priorities. Sanitary sewer overflows have decreased drastically, in number and in volume. Several of the organization’s divisions are third-party certified to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management standard. Additionally, many CFPUA facilities have robust recycling programs that allow the organization to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

In keeping with CFPUA’s new strategic plan adopted in early 2019, CFPUA will be working to expand on these efforts and continue work to reduce its impact on the environment. The new committee will track CFPUA’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) pilot program, monitor the organization’s energy use data, and approve new programs and projects moving forward.

The committee will hold its first meeting at 11 a.m. October 22 in the CFPUA offices at 235 Government Center Drive. CFPUA will continue to update the public on the work of this committee and will regularly update our website with information on the organization’s environmental programs and projects.
