Survey work has begun on the Northern Water Mains project, which will improve fire protection and increase available water capacity in Northern New Hanover County.
The $3.9 million project involves the installation of a new 16-inch water main from Blue Clay Road, along Holland Drive, north along Castle Hayne Road to GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, east along Hermitage and finally to Juvenile Center Drive where it will connect with an existing water main. The red dashed line in the map below denotes the 4.6-mile route. Substantial completion is expected by July 2020.

The new water main is expected to increase water capacity in the area by 2 million gallons per day (MGD). In addition, under an interlocal agreement, New Hanover County is providing approximately $158,000 for the installation of 26 new fire hydrants.
Northern Water Mains has been designated as a cost-recovery project, with reimbursement provided through system development charges paid by developers and businesses who benefit from the service it will provide.
T.A. Loving Company was awarded a $3.9 million construction contract in August.
No road closures are anticipated, though construction may require temporary lane closures.
Approximately 160 property owners along the route of the new water main have been notified and provided with the opportunity to request taps for water connections. Contractor crews will be in the area over the next several weeks to talk with residents and leave flyers describing the project.
