CFPUA Biosolids Release: Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant
Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) operators identified a release of biosolids on October 27, 2018, at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant at approximately 5 am this morning. Operators took steps to immediately stop the biosolids release and notified management who responded to the site. The root cause is still being investigated. At this time, we know that water entered a control panel and short-circuited the system.
CFPUA estimates that 30,000 gallons reached the Cape Fear River through our storm drain system. This area has been cleaned, and the release was reported to N.C. Division of Water Quality. Sampling of the impacts to the Cape Fear River is currently underway.
