Hurricanes and tropical storms have the potential to cause damage to CFPUA’s drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. Heavy rains, flooding, high winds, and coastal storm surge can lead to water service interruptions.

CFPUA is dedicated to keeping you informed during weather-related events. We use four main type of advisories to do so. Here are the four that you need to know:

  • Informational – CFPUA will let customers know of any planned or anticipated changes in water quality. We will also provide advice on actions you can take to stay safe.
  • Boil Water Advisories – These notices inform you to boil your water before use. This is a common advisory and is typically limited to a defined area. Boil water advisories are usually issued because of concern of microbial contamination.
  • Do Not Drink – These advisories tell customers to us an alternative source of drinking water. These advisories are extremely rare.
  • Do Not Use – Warns customers to not use tap water for any purpose (including bathing and flushing.) These advisories are extremely rare.

Before the hurricane hits, CFPUA is making all the necessary preparations for the storm. We have been busy making sure all vehicles are topped off with fuel, all generators are working correctly, and that all needed resources are available. Additionally, we are prepositioning equipment and personnel. We are prepared to activate the Emergency Command Center (EOC) later this week.

One function of the EOC is to communicate our updates in real time with our customers and local partners. After the storm ends, the EOC will be staffed and we will issue regular updates. To get the updates sent directly to your email or phone, please sign up for the NotifyMe system.

You can sign up for NotfiyMe by going to www.cfpua.org. On the home page, there is a center button of a bell icon. Click on the bell icon. You are now on the NotifyMe page. Put your email address in the first field and click “sign in.” Select your text or email preference. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “News Flash.” You will get a message confirming your subscription.

As always, CFPUA appreciates our customers and we are dedicated to providing safe drinking water.
