WILMINGTON, NC, April 29, 2014: The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) is pleased to announce that Carel Vandermeyden has been named its new Director of Engineering. He replaces Frank Styers, who was chosen to serve as the Authority’s Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer earlier this year. Mr. Vandermeyden’s first day with CFPUA was Monday, April 28, 2014.
Carel comes to CFPUA after serving for the past seven-and-a-half years as the Chief Engineer and Superintendent of Engineering Management with the Greater Cincinnati Water Works, which serves more than 1.1 million people in Ohio and Kentucky. During his time in Cincinnati, Mr. Vandermeyden was responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Engineering Management Division, which handled the development services and planning, design, construction management and inspection of all water infrastructure for the utility through a $55 million-a-year Capital Improvement Program. In the last year, he also managed the implementation of Greater Cincinnati’s $260 million-a-year Capital Improvement Program for the newly formed joined water and wastewater utility.

His fresh perspective will undoubtedly benefit the Authority and our customers.”
Mr. Vandermeyden also served as the Assistant Water Treatment Superintendent with Greater Cincinnati, where he was responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Water Works Department’s two water treatment plants, which can handle 280 million gallons of water a day, 25 pump stations and 33 water storage reservoirs. Overall, Mr. Vandermeyden is a professional engineer (P.E.) with nearly 30 years of water and wastewater utility experience as a senior engineer, project manager and project engineer. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) was formed by the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County to combine their water and sewer operations. It began operations on July 1, 2008.
