The State of North Carolina has presented former CFPUA Executive Director Jim Flechtner with the Old North State Award in recognition of his 27 years of public service.

"JimThe award, which recognizes “dedication and service beyond expectation and excellence to the Great State of North Carolina,” was presented to Mr. Flechtner on Tuesday, July 13, by New Hanover County Commissioner and CFPUA Board member Jonathan Barfield during the County Commissioners meeting.

The Commissioners also approved a resolution acknowledging Mr. Flechtner’s “dedicated service to the community and his high standards of professional ethics and personal integrity.” Commissioner and CFPUA Board member Rob Zapple presented the resolution.

Mr. Flechtner joined CFPUA in 2008 as one of its original employees and served as its Executive Director from 2014 until his retirement at the end of June 2021. Prior to his work at CFPUA, Mr. Flechtner spent 14 years at the City of Wilmington, primarily in the Traffic Engineering Division.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo also spoke Tuesday, thanking Flechtner for his work at the City on projects such as the Wrightsville Avenue/South 17th Street corridor redesign, and his leadership at CFPUA on efforts that significantly reduced sanitary sewer overflows across the service area.
