Wilmington, NC (January 19, 2017): Today, North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry presented the staffs of Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s (CFPUA) Richardson Nanofiltration Water Plant and its main offices at 235 Government Center Drive with the State of North Carolina’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (S.H.A.R.P.) Awards. The honors recognize public sector employers for establishing and maintaining effective safety and health programs. The S.H.A.R.P. process is focused on getting employees involved in driving improvements in their organization’s safety and health programs, while advancing quality and productivity.

S.H.A.R.P. status continues to place CFPUA in an elite group of facilities that maintain exemplary injury and illness prevention programs. Both facilities were selected based, in part, on the work of its respective Safety Committee Members and staff’s participation in a series of comprehensive health and safety inspections with Occupational Safety and Health Administration consultants. Their recordkeeping, right-to-know, and training records and procedures were reviewed and the consultants completed a thorough walk-through inspection of the facility.

To receive the awards, CFPUA had to abate any hazards identified by the consultants, score well on the Safety and Health Assessment, and maintain injury/illness rate at or below the NC Planning, Statistics and Information Management (PSIM) Public Sector Targeting Analysis Report.

This marks the third straight year that multiple CFPUA staffs have received the awards. CFPUA’s Environmental Services Division and Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant staffs were recognized for their work in 2015 while our Sweeney Water Treatment Plant and Northside Wastewater Treatment Plant staffs were named for their work in 2014.
